How To Get A Refund From Your Old Oyster Card

Changes to the Tenant Fees Act came into force on 1st June 2019
Changes to the Tenant Fees Act came into force on 1st June 2019

If like our family, you may have collected several Oyster Cards over the years, some may still have credit, others may not.

Well a good little tip would be to remember that you would have paid a £5 deposit for your card and you can now easily claim this back at a Tube station ticket machine.

At a Tube station ticket machine, you can get a refund of up to £10 pay as you go credit and your deposit.

Simply touch your Oyster card on the yellow card reader on the ticket machine, select 'Oyster refund' and follow the on screen instructions. You can see the refunded amount due on the screen before finalising your request.

Please note that if you only have pay as you go credit on your Oyster card and get a refund you won't be able to use your Oyster card again. Make sure you no longer need it before you request a refund.

Refunds are paid back in cash dispensed from the ticket machine. If you have more than £10 pay as you go credit or a valid season ticket on your Oyster card you can't get a refund at the ticket machine and have to request a refund by post.

Can I get a refund at the end of my trip if I don’t use all the credit on my Visitor Oyster card or Oyster card?

As your Visitor Oyster card never expires, we recommend that you keep you card for future return visits to London, or lend it to family and friends to use when they come to London. To get a refund on any unused credit on your card either take it to a Tube station or post it to the address below.

Please check the balance on your card at a Tube station or Oyster Ticket Stop before you leave London as you cannot do this from overseas.

How do I claim a refund for my Visitor Oyster card credit by post?
