Nectar & eBay users need to be aware of this major change
If you are a collector of Nectar points and are one of the savvy eBay customers who enjoy collecting points when they make purchases on the popular selling site, from September 1st, 2024, significant changes are coming to the eBay and Nectar partnership, that will make a difference to how you'll need to shop on eBay. Here's a detailed breakdown of what you need to know:
Changes to Nectar Points Collection on eBay
The new rules come into force on September 1, 2024, when eBay shoppers will no longer be able to collect or spend Nectar points directly on the eBay website or app. Instead, to earn Nectar points on eBay purchases, customers will need to shop through the Nectar website or mobile app.
How to Earn Points After the Change
1. Go to the Nectar website or app
2. Search for eBay
3. Click through to the eBay website or app
4. Make your purchase as usual
It works in a similar way that customers cashback from a cashback site such as TopCashback or Quidco, by visiting the cashback site, with savvy money savers clicking through to the retailer and then making their purchases as normal, to then be rewarded with Nectar points. I've been unable to find clarification, but I suspect that this means if you were to use a cashback site to earn cashback on your eBay purchases, you'll no longer be able to do this as the eBay will only reward you cashback or points from the last cashback site (including Nectar) you came to eBay via, so you wouldn't be able to use both the Nectar site or app and a cashback app, you'd have to decide which reward you'd prefer; cashback or Nectar points, and with cashback sites such as Complete Savings offering 10% cashback (subscription required), I'd suspect that the cashback site will be the better reward for a savvy eBay buyer!
Improved Earning Rate
While the collection method is changing, there's good news for shoppers. The earning rate will increase from 1 point per £1 spent to 2 points for every £1 spent on eBay when shopping via Nectar, so Nectar members could earn twice the amount of eBay Nectar points than they use to, which could be a significant change for frequent eBay users; so long as they remember to click through to eBay via Nectar before making a purchase!
Key Dates
- 31st August 2024: Last day to collect Nectar points directly on eBay
- September 1st, 2024: New system begins; shop through Nectar to earn points on eBay purchases
What Happens to Existing Points and Vouchers?
1. Existing Nectar Points: All points, including bonus points, collected on eBay will remain in your Nectar account, so Nectar point collectors won't lose any points
2. eBay Vouchers: Any Nectar vouchers you've already converted from Nectar points can still be used until they expire (The expiration date is 12 months from the issue date)
3. Point Conversion: You have until August 31, 2024, to convert Nectar points into eBay vouchers. After this date, this option will no longer be available
Additional Information
- Points should be credited within 28 days of purchase
- For missing points related to eBay transactions, contact eBay customer service
- For issues with your Nectar account or Nectar card, contact Nectar customer service
- This doesn't affect Nectar and Sainsbury's supermarkets purchases.
No immediate action is required from users. However, it's important to remember to start shopping through Nectar from September 1, 2024, to continue earning points on eBay purchases.
These changes represent a significant shift in how eBay and Nectar work together, but they also offer an opportunity for increased point earnings for savvy shoppers who adapt to the new system.
Removal of eBay seller fees: Earlier this year, eBay removed fees on an eligible item from private sellers wishing to sell clothing, making the process of selling clothes via the popular online marketplace more cost-effective and helping eBay claw back some of its users who migrated over to eBay rival, Vinted as a way to sell their unwanted clothing with no fees. Business/bulk sellers are still subject to the per-order fee.
