COVID tax relief for working from home.
The Government has announced that if you've been working from home and had additional expenses as a result (e.g. heating, lighting or wifi) you can claim a £6 tax relief allowance per week, for the full tax year 2020/2021.
This equates to £62 cash in the pocket if on basic tax or £124 if you pay at 40% tax for the year. This works even if:
Your offices are still open but fewer people can go in due to Covid precautions You work part-time You only need to work at home on certain days
To process the claims, HMRC have just set up a dedicated working from home HMRC micro-service that will automatically apply the whole 2020/21 tax year’s relief via your tax code – making claiming the whole amount very easy.
You’ll need to have your Government Gateway ID to do it. You’ll need your P60/payslip and passport if you’ve not already got the ID. Once online, the claim itself is just a few quick clicks. It's done by altering your tax code, which means the amount taken off your payslip in tax is altered, which means you'll take home more pay.
