B&Q, the UK home improvement retailer, operates a Community Re-Use Programme which aims to donate unsellable products and materials to local organisations, serving a dual purpose of waste reduction and community support.

B&Q's Re-Use Programme Helps Organisations By Offering Free Surplus Materials For Projects

B&Q, the UK home improvement retailer, operates a Community Re-Use Programme that aims to donate unsellable products and materials to local organisations, serving the dual purposes of waste reduction and community support.

What Sort Of Products Does B&Q Donate To Community Projects?

The scheme primarily focuses on donating items that would otherwise be discarded, including:

  • Plastic plant pots and trays

  • Plants that are past their best and other compostable materials

  • Damaged or part-filled cans of paint

  • Pallets

  • Broken tiles and slabs

  • Ends of wallpaper rolls

  • End-of-line stock

These materials are offered to various local organisations, such as schools, charities, community groups, and educational institutions, at no cost.

How Has The Scheme Worked To Date?

According to B&Q's reports, in a recent year:

  • Over 50,000 products were donated

  • More than 600 local causes were supported

These donations have helped transform local spaces and provided resources to organisations serving their communities. Since the scheme started, over 1940 community projects have been supported, with over 820 tonnes of products that otherwise might have gone to landfill.

How Can An Organisation Apply For The Free B&Q Excess Stocks?

B&Q has partnered with Neighbourly, a giving platform, to manage the donation process. Eligible organisations can register through the Neighbourly platform, select their local B&Q store, and indicate the types of items they're interested in receiving.

Successful applicants can then go to the stores and collect the items they've asked for.

Limitations and Considerations Of The Scheme

It's important to note several aspects of the programme:

  1. Availability of items is not guaranteed due to the nature of the materials being donated.

  2. B&Q cannot ensure the suitability of items for re-use, as they are unsellable products.

  3. The company expects that donated materials will not be resold and that recipients will handle responsible disposal if necessary.

  4. No electrical or dangerous products are included in the donations.

This programme is part of B&Q's broader corporate social responsibility efforts, and provides benefits to local communities. It also serves B&Q's interests by reducing the amount of waste it creates, which is expensive to dispose of, but ultimately, for organisations who have very limited budgets, it can be an advantageous way to lower costs and help improve the local community.
